Saint Lucia: MET service issues flood alert due to unfavourable weather conditions

Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia met services shared an update on the weather condition and altered that the flood situation could prevail in the country. A strong tropical wave situated a few hundred miles east-southeast of Saint Lucia is moving slowly westward near 11 mph /18 km/h.

Environmental conditions do not appear conducive to additional development. The tropical wave is part of a broad area of low pressure and is expected to affect Saint Lucia from late tonight into Saturday. 

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services is hence issuing a flood alert for Saint Lucia from 2:00 am Thursday morning until 4:00 pm Friday afternoon.

As per the met service, associated with this strong tropical wave are moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall estimates of 75 to 100 mm(3 — 4 inches) with higher amounts in mountainous areas can be expected on the Windward Islands. Residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides are advised to be extremely vigilant due to soils being close to or at saturation point.

The government of Saint Lucia asked the residents to pay attention to further announcements from the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services and NEMO.

As per the weather update, Saint Lucia met service predicted the cloudy weather with light showers for the Hewanorra Airport, and the temperature stood at 29°C or 84°F. Wind at Hewanorra Airport is also flowing from the east-southeast at ten mph or 17 km/h.

Rainfall in the 24-hour period has been predicted for Saint Lucia, which ended at 2:00 pm today. Winds would be blowing from between the east and east-southeast near 12 mph or 19 km/h, with gusts near showers.

Weather: There would be generally cloudy skies, with scattered showers and scattered thunderstorms.

On Friday, the met service of Saint Lucia issued a flood alert for the country and hence residents and motorists in areas prone to flooding. They also asked to remain cautious and extremely vigilant in the areas prone to landslides
