Castries, Saint Lucia: The Grassroots Netball program organized by the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports – Saint Lucia is currently ongoing at the Vigie Multi-Purpose SportsComplex (VMPSC) and continues to attract several newcomers.

The program is facilitated by a national netball coach attached to the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, Alice Lynch. Over 30 students between the ages 12 – 15 from five secondary schools namely, St. Joseph’s Convent, Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School, Bocage Secondary, Entrepot Secondary, and Babonneau Secondary are the ones in attendance.

At Tuesday’s training session, the participating student-athletes gave the program a thumbs up, saying, it’s a good initiative and would like to continue in the sport to go on and represent Saint Lucia.

Speaking to coach Lynch on the fundamental aspect of the game. She said, “It is important to practice the various passes, both two-handed and single-handed, as they are all used in a game”.

The morning sessions continued with a drill called " full circle passing," players pass the ball to each other in a circle until a full rotation is complete. According to Lynch, “I am happy to have these young ladies to work with, there is a great pool of talent and hence the need to nature it like a garden, so it grows”.

“We seriously need to tap on the talent available and sporting initiatives like the Grassroots Netball Programmes will help in bringing out the young ones”. One would never imagine the sport of netball there are several types of passes to include short passes like the chest, bounce, underarm, long, overarm, shoulder, and overhead.

Following the netball session on the court, the players turn their attention to the Vigie Boxing Gym for some light workout including biking and skipping under the supervision of National Boxing Coach, Conrad Frederick and Netball Coach – Alice Lynch.

With the school’s schedule to reopen for the third team on Monday, 24th April, netball training will resume this Saturday, 22nd April, and every Saturday thereafter at the VMPSC.
