Castries, Saint Lucia: The Prize Giving Ceremony of the Gros Islet Football League’s inaugural Beach Football competition took place on Wednesday, 19th April, at the Gros Islet Human Resource Development Center of Saint Lucia. 

Present at the launch were the Parliamentary Rep. for Gros Islet, Kenson Casimir, Mayor of Gros Islet Egbert Lucien, Shane Paul President of the Gros Islet Football League, representatives of the participating teams and Media Rep Michael Pierre.

In his brief address, President Paul gave a report on the concluded tournament indicating that five teams participated namely Corinth, Gros Islet Best, Pigeon Point Fond Assau All Stars and the champions Fond Assau Young Boys, with approximately forty players participating resulting in 53 goals being scored.

He thanked Kenson Casimir for his unwavering sponsorship and support for the development of football within the community and in addition the sponsorship rendered by the St. Lucia Football Association Inc.

For his part Mayor Egbert Lucien, expressed his delight at being part and parcel of the proceedings while reminding all and sundry, that sports is one of the pivotal vehicle that brings communities together. He echoed the sentiments that society at large can emulate the successes that have been achieved through sports and congratulated and encouraged everyone on their achievements.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Casimir indicated how happy he was to be present at this auspicious occasion, and indicated that following discussions with the Saint Lucia Football Association Inc. the Government is prepared to take Beach Football to another level. That being cognizant of the fact that some years ago Saint Lucia won the gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games.

To this end a site has been identified in the Gros Islet area for the construction of Beach Football field, and once the finance has been forthcoming the construction will take place. Parliamentary Rep Casimir also indicated that now the solar lighting has been fully installed and operational, the next stage is the fully renovation of the Corinth Playing Field for the staging of a number of sporting activities, foremost of these being a major community Futsal competition.

In closing he thanked everyone for making the inaugural Beach Football competition a success.

Bringing the curtains down on the evening’s proceedings was the award of prizes.

  • Most Goals – Rikelme Lionel ( 15 ) – Young Boys Fond Assau – Trophy and $250.00
  • MVP of the tournament – Rikelme Lionel – Trophy and $250.00
  • Third Place – Corinth – Trophy and $1000. 00
  • Second Place – Fond Assau All Stars – Trophy and $1,500
  • First Place – Fond Assau Young Boys – Trophy and $3,000. 00
