Castries, Saint Lucia: Helpaws asked the citizens to adopt the puppies for the betterment of their life. While humans rely on words to communicate, the eyes of an animal can tell their story in complete silence in Saint Lucia.

During a busy day at the spay/neuter clinic, we were notified of a small puppy, all alone, on a street not far away. It wasn’t difficult to find her as she cowered against the wall of a building, seemingly frozen in fear. So tiny, and utterly alone in a world that must seem terrifyingly cruel and confusing, she didn’t even flinch as I reached for her. She tentatively lifted her gaze and our eyes met, I understood the questions she was asking. Am I safe with you? Will you protect me?

Chevy has been at the shelter with us for a week. It didn’t take long for her to let down her walls and show us what she’s made of. She is spunky, playful, sweet, and endearing. She runs in circles when she is excited, and loves to cuddle her stuffy during naps. Although she is still in quarantine, she appears to be in good health and is eager to get out and join the pups on the healthy side of the shelter.

I will forever be in awe of the resiliency of the animals we rescue. Even the most tragic cases come to us with hearts that are willing and able to forgive and forget so easily. A little love and compassion goes a long way. If only all humans were capable of showing the same qualities.
