Castries, Saint Lucia: With 449 days still to go for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Helena Renee will be Chef de Mission for Saint Lucia Olympic Team. The Saint Lucia Olympic Committee (SLOC) Inc President Alfred Emmanuel announced on Wednesday, 10th May 2023, during a press conference at its Headquarters in La Clery.
According to Emmanuel, “The SLOC Inc wasted no time in selecting our Head of Delegation to the Games; that person will be the SLOC Chef de Mission in Paris. That individual will be responsible for each and everything, the most powerful Saint Lucian that will be on the ground in Paris looking after the affairs of Team Saint Lucia”.
In his own words, Emmanuel said, “It gives me great pleasure, members of the media and, by extension, the wider Saint Lucian public, to inform you that the SLOC Inc has appointed Helena Renee as Saint Lucia Chef de Mission to Paris 2024 Olympic Games”.
Renee is a former national track and field athlete and former national netballer. She also captured the Netballer and Athlete of the Year in both sporting disciplines during her illustrious career.
“I am proud and humbled to take on that role, and I promised President, it’s going to be the most memorable and successful Olympic Games Saint Lucia has participated in”. she said.
She continued, “I am also proud and humbled to support our exceptional athletes and to make sure that they perform to the best of their ability at the Games”.
A resident of the Western Town (Soufriere), she represented Saint Lucia in netball and track and field for several years, unfortunately not at the Olympics. “This role to be head of a delegation is an absolute honour. We are looking forward to a great journey at the Olympics”, she added.
In thanking the SLOC Inc and its President, Alfred Emmanuel, Renee said, “My role would be to ensure that the right environment is set and provided for everybody so the athletes can do their very best at the Olympics and secondly, the health and safety is a priority for me and the entire team.“
