Prez Ali meets CEO of DNATA, discusses establishment of air cargo terminal at CJIA in Guyana

President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali, met with Janis Balkans, the CEO of New and Emerging Markets- International Airport Operations of the Dubai National Air Travel Agency (dnata), part of the Emirates Group, on Friday, April 1, 2022.

The meeting was held at the Office of the President on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive. 

While informing about the meeting, President Irfaan Ali noted, “Today met with Janis Balkans, the CEO of New and Emerging Markets- International Airport Operations of the Dubai National Air Travel Agency (dnata), part of the Emirates Group, at the Office of the President on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.”

He further outlined the major topics touched on in the meeting and stated that the main discussions focused on the establishment of an air cargo terminal at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). 

President Ali highlighted the “tremendous opportunities” which exist to create not just a terminal but a hub. 

Further, In sharing his observations, Balkens also pointed to the positive signs that “there is business here” in Guyana.

Cheddi Jagan International Airport was established in 1959, and dnata ensures the aviation industry operates smoothly and efficiently in 131 airports across the Middle East, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa, North America, and South America.

It offers ground handling, cargo, travel, and flight catering services. It is also a strategic partner of West Jet and hundreds of other airlines.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar and CEO of CJIA, Ramesh Ghir, also attended the meeting.

While appreciating President Dr Irfaan Ali, several residents of the country applauded the steps and outlined the importance of the airport.  

One of the residents named Rabbiyah Khatoon said, “With all the new Business Investments generated, this is a great Idea/Proposal for a Cargo Terminal.”

Phil Andrew Ram added, “I will be the first to transit this route since family is in India and I work in the cruise industry.”

Ray Al Maida affirmed, “DATA is one of the best in the world if you can bring them to GUYANA; it’s a big achievement.
