Beijing, China: President Xi Jinping announced to relax zero-COVID policy in order to revive the economy of China. The Community Party stated that the policy could fracture the economic and social structures, as per James Stent- an author of China’s Banking Transformation: The Untold Story.
According to the author, President Xi Jinping imposed the zero-COVID policy and locked all borders which was highly applauded by countries across the globe. However, the entire scenario changed in mid-2021 as the world started living with the virus, and China remained stuck with it.
With the spread of the COVID pandemic, China witnessed a strained economy, local government budgets, small business failures, and youth employment. The author outlined that President Jinping won a third term as party leader at the conclave and protests erupted on the streets of Shanghai, the Zero-COVID was abruptly dropped. The officials announced that the virus no longer remains dangerous for the lives of the people.
Now, zero COVID primarily triggered protests across the country, and by ending the policy, the authorities ended the protests. According to the author, Jinping’s strong leadership evidently indicated that any protest could hardly impact his control of the nation.
Earlier, CCP also hosted the annual meeting of China’s Central Economic Work Conference on December 15-16 to address the issue of the COVID surge in the country. President Jinping stated that the big tech of China could effectively contribute to the strengthening of the economic structure of the country which helps in employment generation and promoting exports.
Along with that, President also advised the Chinese Communist Party leaders to strengthen their skills and abilities to match the changing global scenario. Furthermore, while addressing the “democratic life meeting” of CCP’s Politburo, President Jinping exhorted the party leaders to continuously enhance their ability for promoting high-quality development. He added that there is a dire need to make up for the deficiencies in knowledge as well as the shortcomings in ability and experience.
