Guyana: President Dr Irfaan Ali received a visit from Guyana’s first UFC fighter Carlston Harris, at the State House on Friday, June 3, 2022. 

The 34-year-old, who won his first two fights in the UFC last year before suffering his first defeat in February, is in Guyana for the first time in 16 years.

President Ali told him that he and all of Guyana are proud of his accomplishments and that he has the support of the Government.

Harris, who is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, said he was grateful for the meeting.

“I want to thank the President for receiving me and for all the assistance; it was an honour to reach the President in person.” Harris, who was accompanied by his sister Vanelda Harris, presented the Head of State with a pair of gloves and other UFC items.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, this afternoon, announced a $100,000 one-off cash grant for each child with a disability. The Head of State and First Lady Arya Ali made the announcement while entertaining hundreds of children with disabilities and their parents at State House.

Upon the request of the President, parents voiced their concerns and made recommendations.

After assessing the bulk of their concerns, President Ali committed to procuring vehicles for the care centres countrywide; to working with the Ministry of Education in designing a programme to train more special needs teachers, while he promised to put systems in place to ensure that special needs children automatically qualify for public assistance.

Dr Irfaan Ali extended best wishes to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II for her Platinum Jubilee achievement and 96th birthday celebration during a reception held in her honour this evening at the residence of the British High Commissioner to Guyana, H.E Jane Miller (OBE).

President Irfaan Ali also hosted the Agri-Investment Forum and Expo in Guyana, where CARICOM Heads of Government participated.
