Guyana: President Dr. Irfaan Ali presided over the second meeting of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) Multi-Stakeholder Steering Committee (MSSC) at the President’s Office on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive on Monday, March 27, 2022.

The MSSC, chaired by the Head of State, is working to finalize the draft LCDS 2030.

The role of the MSSC relates to overall guidance and strategic direction for consultations on the LCDS 2030, as well as implementation.

LCDS 2030 will create a new low-carbon economy in Guyana by establishing incentives that value the world’s ecosystem services and by promoting these as an essential component of a new model of global development with sustainability at its core.

The Committee is comprised of a cross-section of representatives, including the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous Peoples, the Amerindian People’s Association, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana, and the Private Sector Commission, among others.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh; Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai and Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, were also at today’s meeting.

The first MSSC meeting was held on February 14, 2022.

President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali

Further, on March 26, 2022, President Dr Irfaan Ali also received a courtesy visit today from a high-level team from UNICEF led by its Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jean Gough, at the Office of the President on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.

Gough’s team included UNICEF Representative to Guyana and Suriname Nicolas Pron and UNICEF Deputy Representative to Guyana and Suriname Irfan Akhtar, accompanied by UN Resident Coordinator Yesim Oruc.

The discussion surrounded UNICEF and Guyana’s new Country Programme Document (CPD), which will provide a framework of cooperation between the non-profit organization and the Government of Guyana from March 2022 to December 2026.

The CPD was developed through an inclusive and participatory process involving extensive consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Government.

It outlines UNICEF’s priorities over the next five years, which are also aligned with the Government of Guyana’s efforts to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for women and children while helping to address key issues that many children face, including those associated with health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education and social protection.
