President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, has attended and took participation in the 101st Special Meeting hosted by the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED).

President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, has attended and took participation in the 101st Special Meeting hosted by the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED). 

During the meeting, President Ali was accompanied by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugg Todd, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper and Director of Projects at the Office of the President, Marcia Sharma.

Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) promotes the trade and economic development of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and overlooks the Single Market and Economic functions and operations.

Article 15 of Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas explains that the Council, which consists of Ministers designated by the Member States, will-

  • To promote the development & oversee the operations of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.
  • To evaluate, promote and establish measures to enhance production, quality control and marketing of industrial & agricultural commodities to assure their international competitiveness.
  • To establish and promote measures to drive structural diversification of industrial and agricultural production on a sustainable & regionally-unified basis.
  • To determine and promote measures for the accelerated development and marketing of services.
  • To promote and organize policies and programmes to regulate the flow of people & goods.
  • To promote the measures for the development of energy & natural resources on a sustainable basis.
  • To establish and further promote the measures for the continuous development of science and technology.
  • To promote and develop policies for the protection of and preservation of the environment & for sustainable development.
  • To promote & develop, in collaboration with the Council for Foreign and Community Relations, coordinated policies to enhance the community’s external economic & trade relations. 
  • To undertake any extra functions remitted to it by the Conference, arising under this Treaty.
