PNCR extends wishes to people of Guyana on ‘Portuguese Arrival Day’

On the occasion of Portuguese Arrival Day - People’s National Congress Reform- PNCR extended greetings to all the people of Guyana island, especially people who belong to Portuguese origin.

Guyana: On the occasion of Portuguese Arrival Day – People’s National Congress Reform- PNCR extended greetings to all the people of Guyana island, especially people who belong to Portuguese origin.

Guyana, as the nation observes its 186th anniversary of the arrival of the first Madeiran-Portuguese enslaved immigrants.

The Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform-PNCR- David Granger, and President of Guyana, issued a public notice on 27th February 2017 proclaiming 3rd May each year as ‘Portuguese Arrival Day.’

The intention behind the public notice was to – intensify national integration and promote social cohesion by according due respect and recognition to each ethnic group of the society.

Portuguese immigration was started in 1835 at an auspicious moment in time marked by the anticipation of the release of enslaved Africans. Portuguese Arrival Day – celebrates the contribution that the people of Portuguese ancestry have made to nation-building.

It is also a celebration of the plural character of the Guyanese nation and is intended to promote greater social cohesion. Portuguese enterprise and their establishment of institutions to advance social development and social responsibility have cemented their place in society.

Migration and miscegenation have decreased their numbers, but their contributions in the establishment of the Guyana nation remains ineradicable. The People’s National Congress Reform- PNCR wishes everyone a happy ‘Portuguese Arrival Day.’

PNCR is one of the political parties of Guyana nation, founded in 1957. PNCR was split from People’s Progressive Party. PNCR works on the ideology of – social democracy, democratic socialism. PNCR holds 31 out of 65 seats in the national assembly.

Guyana is officially known as – Co-operative Re[ublic of Guyana. The word Guyana is derived from ‘Guiana’. There are nine tribes that are residing in Guyana nation,- the Wai Wai, Macushi, Lokono, Patamona, Kalina, Wapishana, Pemon, Warao and Akawaio.
