PM Terrance Drew mourns loss of lives in Guyana school dormitory fire

St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis- Dr Terrance Drew, mourned the loss of lives in the fatal fire at Guyana’s Mahdia Secondary School dormitory. He extended condolences to the parents and families of the students. 

PM Terrance Drew took to Facebook and stated that the Government and People of St Kitts and Nevis mourned alongside the Government and People of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. 

He said that it is difficult to express the deep sadness he felt learning of the disastrous fire that occurred at the Mahdia Secondary School’s female dormitory. The void left by the 19 lives lost in the fire will ripple from immediate family and close friends to the wider community and the whole Guyanese citizenry. The effects of which may never be fully understood.

PM Terrance Drew extended condolences to the families and said that the Government of St Kitts and Nevis offers its sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the Government and People of Guyana. 

“We also pray that those families and friends would find some measure of comfort at this most difficult time, “said the prime minister. 

Mahdia Secondary School dormitory in Guyana was ravaged by fire on Monday night, killing 19 students, including a five-year-old boy. According to the reports, fourteen students lost their lives on the spot, and five died at the Mahdia District Hospital. Two children were under observation, and four were nursing severe injuries. 

The President of Guyana extended condolences to the families of the students by meeting with them. He also declared a three-day national mourning, and flags were flown at half-mast as members of the Guyana Fire Service also hosted a minute of silence in remembrance of the children who lost their lives in last night’s devastating fire at the dormitory.

President Irfaan Ali said, “As a people, this is a time when we should dig deep into our hearts and reach out with love, reach out with care and reach out with kind words in support of these families and communities.”
