St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew attended a candlelight vigil organized by the Guyanese community in St Kitts and Nevis to pay tribute to 19 students in a dormitory fire last week. On his Facebook page, he shared glimpses of the vigil.
PM Terrance Drew said, “A candlelight vigil was organized by the Guyanese community here in St Kitts and Nevis to honour the lives of the 19 students who died in the fire that engulfed Mahdia Secondary School’s female dormitory.”
The horrific incident took the lives of 18 girls and one boy. Governor-General Dame Marcella Liburd GCMG, JP, and Marsha Henderson also attended to pay their respects and show support to the community.
Earlier, Prime Minister Terrance Drew also mourned the lives of the students who had been killed in the dormitory fire. He said that it is difficult to express the deep sorrow felt learning of the disastrous fire that occurred at the Mahdia Secondary School’s female dormitory.
The void left by the 19 lives lost in the fire will ripple from immediate family and close friends to the wider community and the whole Guyanese citizenry. The effects of which may never be fully understood.
“The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis offers its sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and to the Government and People of Guyana. We also pray that those families and friends would find some measure of comfort at this most difficult time,”said the prime minister.
Earlier, the flag-raising ceremony to usher in Guyana’s 57th independence anniversary was transformed into an evening of prayer and reflection in honour of the 19 students who lost their lives in the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire. Along with that, Sereenity Roberts, one of the girls who managed to escape the fire at the female dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School, asked President Dr Irfaan Ali to sing a song to help uplift the families in Region Eight and across the country. Serenity lost her sister Andrea in the horrific fire.
