Roseau, Dominica: Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr Cariisa Etienne, visited the Commonwealth of Dominica and will lead a delegation in the country for this entire week. On Friday, April 22, 2022, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit held a meeting with Dr Etienne in his office.
“This morning, I met with the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr Carissa Etienne, who is leading a delegation to Dominica this week,” noted PM Skerrit.
PM Skerrit and the Director of PAHO discussed ways to strengthen the health sector in Dominica and outlined ways and strategies plan for the more effective delivery of healthcare in the country.
The PAHO team is here to conduct a retreat with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment to assist with the development of a strategic plan for the more effective delivery of healthcare in Dominica, among other activities.
Various initiatives such as ramp-up of the vaccination drive in Dominica in which PAHO helps the country to create a framework to contain the COVID-19 situation.
Further, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit expressed gratitude to the Director of PAHO for his incredible approach toward the COVID-19 pandemic and trained the medical staff appropriately.

He outlined that PAHO has extended their hands in the technical and resources assistance in the tough time of the COVID-19 Dominica.
PM Skerrit emphasized, “I took the opportunity to thank Dr Etienne for her exceptional leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and for PAHO’s continuing support of our health system through training, mobilization of resources and technical assistance.”
Dr Etienne was accompanied by Dr Godfrey Xuereb, Head of Country and Subregional Cooperation at PAHO and Country Programme Officer for Dominica, Ms Anneke Wilson.
Besides this, PAHO also donated essential equipment to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes two buses, vaccine carriers, nebulizers & several other medical supplies. Moreover, 20 oxygen tanks have also been provided by PAHO to the country, which assisted them in containing the oxygen shortage in the country.
