Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit participated in the virtual ‘summit on democracy’ hosted by the President of United States of America, Joseph R. Biden.
The meeting was held to rally the world’s democracies against the authoritarian models of Russia and China in what President Joe Biden called on Thursday “the defining challenge of our time”.
Leaders of over 100 nations attended the meeting to strategize ways to strengthen and defend democracies.
Alongside PM Skerrit, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business and Diaspora Relations – Dr Kenneth Darroux, also participated in this virtual meet.
PM Skerrit shared this information with the public via his social media account, where he and Dr Darroux participated in the meeting. During the Summit, leaders will discuss the challenges facing democracy and within participating countries.
Meanwhile, while welcoming leaders, President Biden said, “In the face of sustained and concerning challenges to democracy, universal human rights and all around the world, democracy need champions.”
It is a two-day summit that will take place on Friday.
President Biden further added, “Here in the US, we know as anyone who is required to strengthen his democratic institution requires constant effort.”
He said that, “The United States will always be lead by example, investing in our own democracy, supporting our partners around the world at the same time to uplift.”
Apart from leaders and officials from the world, business leaders and journalists, parliamentarians were also invited by the US administration to participate in the Summit.
Meanwhile, both the countries share excellent bilateral relations, and US-Dominica is standing hand to hand in developing Dominica on social and economic developmental grounds.
Even the US has recently started a direct flight to Dominica to mark its presence on the significance it carries on the grounds of becoming an eye to nature.
