PM Rowley congratulates Trinidad-born Dr Shakuntala, winner of World Food Prize 2021

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago- Dr Keith Rowley, congratulated - Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted- Trinidad-born scientist, who was awarded the World Food Prize 2021 on Tuesday 11 May 2021.

Trinidad and Tobago: The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago– Dr Keith Rowley, congratulated – Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted- Trinidad-born scientist, who was awarded the World Food Prize 2021 on Tuesday 11 May 2021.

The award announcement was made by US Secretary of State – Antony J. Blinken and- the Secretary of Agriculture- Thomas J. Vilsack.

Dr Shakuntala, who was born in Reform Village, went to – Naparima Girls High School before going on to earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Tropical Agriculture in 1971 from the University of West Indies, St Augustine.

After her graduation, Dr Shakuntala worked as the – first female agricultural officer at the Ministry of Agriculture in Tobago. In the year- 1980, she received her PhD in – Physiology of Nutrition from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark, where she worked for many years.

Her research focused on food and nutrition security in many developing countries, especially in Asia and Africa. Since 2010, she has been a researcher at WorldFish, headquartered in Penang, Malaysia.

WorldFish is part of CGIAR, which is a global research partnership for a food secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources. Dr Thilsted’s husband Finn is a former Danish ambassador to Bangladesh, Kenya and Nepal.

The World Food Prize is the most prominent global award recognizing a person who has enhanced human development and confronted global hunger through improving the quantity, quality, or availability of food for everyone.

This prize is awarded annually to recognize contributions in any field involved in the world food supply that is – Animal Science/Aqua Culture, Nutrition/Health, Plant Science/Seed Science, Soil Science/Water/Conservation, Policy/Research/Extension, Plant Pathology/Crop Protection, Food Technology/Food Safety, Infrastructure/Emergency Relief, and for Poverty Alleviation/Hunger.

This prize is presented by – World Food Prize Foundation, with various sponsor companies. The first prize was awarded in the year 1987.
