Roseau, Dominica: As the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season started on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit extended their warm wishes of luck and greetings to the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica. 

PM Roosevelt Skerrit also urged Dominicans to take precautionary measures significantly and protect themselves and their families.

Through his social media, PM Roosevelt Skerrit noted, “I extend warm greetings to all. As we enter the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, I urge you to intensify preparations to protect yourselves and your families and take precautionary measures to safeguard your homes, businesses, farms, livestock and other belongings.” 

This hurricane season is predicted to be ‘above average, and though we have been spared the impact of a major cyclone since the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, we should not let down the guard of the country. 

PM Roosevelt Skerrit outlined her preparedness and precautions for Hurricane Season 2022: 

  • Prepare a family emergency and evacuation plan.
  • Build an emergency kit with essential supplies, including medicines
  • Organize important documents and confirm coverage with your insurance provider (Take advantage of the income tax deduction for premiums paid on your home insurance up to $8000 for the income year 2022)
  • Secure your homes-install shutters, clean gutters and drains, trim trees and shrubs
  • Stay Informed

PM Roosevelt Skerrit added that Spare a thought for the most vulnerable in your communities, including the elderly and disabled, and lend a helping hand.

The Government of Dominica continues to build resilient climate infrastructure and develop strategies to strengthen our systems and boost capacity at the individual and community levels to more effectively respond to disaster impacts.

He stated, “In this season and always, your Government is in your corner.”

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also outlined her preparedness for the Hurricane Season as the government vowed to become the world’s first climate-resilient nation. 

Various initiatives such as climate-resilience houses and geothermal projects are something preparedness for Hurricane Season 2022.
