PM Roosevelt Skerrit mourns passing of Dominican Cricket legend Irving Shillingford

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit mourned the passing of Dominican Cricket legend Irving Shillingford. who died on Thursday, calling him an icon who brought great pride and joy to the people of the country.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit mourned the passing of Dominican Cricket legend Irving Shillingford. who died on Thursday, calling him an icon who brought great pride and joy to the people of the country.

While expressing sadness, he took to Facebook, penned a heartfelt note for the former cricket legend, and cited, “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dominican cricket legend Irving Shillingford.” 

The note consisted of lauding the cricketer as PM Roosevelt Skerrit expressed that they had lost a true icon who brought great joy to the cricket-loving Dominican public. He stood as an example of all that was achievable for Dominican players of the most beloved sport in the West Indies. 

Shedding light upon various achievements of Shilingford, PM Skerrit outlined that he played for the West Indies Cricket Team in 1977/78 and is still the only Dominican to have scored a test century. For an all too brief moment, he represented the dreams and aspirations of many Dominican cricketers who hoped to achieve similar glory.

He said that he never lost his love for the game, leading his local club, Cavaliers, well into his 60s and inspiring young cricketers to pursue their own passion for the sport. He also served for many years as a national selector.

“Irving Shillingford was a source of pride for us all and his name is forever etched in the minds and hearts of the Dominican people. We will continue to honour his memory and celebrate his legacy, “said the prime minister. 

While extending condolences, PM Roosevelt Skerrt noted, “On behalf of the Government and People of Dominica, I extend sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and others who mourn his passing.” 

Dominica has lost a cricketing legend today. Irving Shillingford passed at the age of 78. He brought fame to Dominica with his illustrious cricketing career and was the only Dominican to ever score a test century while playing for the West Indies Cricket Team in 1977–1978

Residents and citizens of Dominica also extended their deepest sympathies to his family and everyone else who was grieving his passing.

Invest Dominica Authority asserted, “Condolences to the family and friends of the late Irving Shillingford and Dominicans everywhere. Shillingford was a shining example of Dominican excellence in cricket, and we mourn with you.”
