Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, welcomed the new Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Limya Eltayeb and the Head of the Dominica Project Office, Laura Hildebrandt, on Friday, January 6, 2023.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit met with the representatives after a courtesy call at the office of the prime minister. He took to Facebook and shared the update and glimpses of the meeting.
PM Roosevelt Skerrit cited, “I welcomed the new Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Limya Eltayeb and the Head of the Dominica Project Office, Laura Hildebrandt, for a courtesy call at the Office of the Prime Minister earlier today.”
The meeting featured a discussion on a range of issues, such as the country’s climate-resiliency goals, proper assistance to the Kalinago community, and various matters of concern.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also shed light on the plans and agendas of the government of Dominica for the overall development of women in the meeting with the Resident Representative. The meeting also contained a discussion on energy efficiency and digital transformation. PM Roosevelt Skerrit outlined the ways to strengthen the digitization and modernization of the different sectors in Dominica.
Along with that, their meeting also revolved around the problems faced by the Kalinago community. They discussed the numerous ways to uplift the community and set strategies and developmental goals for them.
Besides this, women’s empowerment has also remained the main highlight of their meeting. PM Roosevelt Skerrit highlighted strategic goals for the enhancement of the participation of women in various fields, especially in agriculture.
Furthermore, the meeting also featured the advancing cooperation in climate resilience, and PM Roosevelt Skerrit talked about his government’s plans to fulfil the goals of being the world’s first climate-resilient country.
PM Roosevelt Skerrit cited, “We discussed advancing cooperation in climate resilience and energy efficiency, digital transformation, and support for the Kalinago community and women in agriculture.”
UNDP promised to extend support to the government and people of Dominica in their path of fulfilling their climate-resilient goals and reducing their carbon footprints.
PM Roosevelt Skerrit noted, “I received the assurance that the UNDP will continue to back Dominica’s efforts to protect the vulnerable and strengthen our resilience to climate change impacts.”
Dominica is on the path to becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation as the government started the initiatives to construct the infrastructure that can withstand any natural disaster. More than 1,500 climate-resilient homes have been distributed, and roads and bridges have been constructed.
The construction of the Geo-Thermal power plant has also assisted the government in reducing carbon footprints and diminishing the impact of climate change.
