Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit believes that the administration at the Dominican China Friendship Hospital needs to do more to inform the public of the services offered at the hospital during the recent press conference.
On responding to the questions as to why certain individuals continue to seek medical care abroad, the Prime Minister stated that the part of the problem is that people are not made aware of available health services at the hospital. He said his original plan for the hospital has not been fully implemented.
“There’s a policy in place in the government that people who are 18 and younger, 16 and over would be provided with free medical care as long as any prime minister of the country not going to change, “said the prime minister.
He asserted that this is a fundamental principal position and in conformity with international requirements that they need to ensure that every citizen has access to Medical Care irrespective of their economic circumstances. However, the reality is that Ministry of Health never implemented the policy of the government properly.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed concern that as a result of the failure to implement his policies for the administration of the hospital some patients who are able to pay fail to do so.
He said, “We indicated as part of that policy decision that those who have insurance and will fall into those categories will be required or their insurance will be required to pay. However, that was never implemented because sometimes when I propose measures in this country that benefit the people there are people who are in the system who opposed to it and because they don’t go about implementing it the way that I have articulated it in policy and I take a blame for it that’s fine I’m a leader of the country but not because I don’t speak to those things and I think I need to start speaking about those things.”
PM Roosevelt Skerrit believed that it may be time to speak out more about the pushback he receives from the system in his attempts to advance his policies. He said that if people will listen to him more will be more advanced than it is today because time for him is priceless.
He said that in Portsmouth, the government introduced a whole set of diagnostic tests including x-ray machines in Portsmouth. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says even the introduction of the ICU was not fully embraced locally.
“When I introduced if I see to Dominica, people in the Minister of Health were opposed to it I have to go myself as prime minister of the country and to go and fetch a location for the ICU unit and to a first terminal history in 2005 we end up having an ICU Unit in Dominica, “said the prime minister.
