Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit on Friday morning handed over the signed proclamation for the observance of University of West Indies (UWI) Day to the Head of the UWI Open Campus, Dominica, Dr Kimone Joseph.
The UWI will be observed its 75-anniversary celebration on Saturday, January 7, 2023. The head of UWI Open Campus, Dominica, was accompanied by Programme Officer Dr Barry Casimir to attend the handover ceremony. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit expressed pleasure to be part of the celebrations of UWI.
“The Government of Dominica is pleased to be part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations of the University of the West Indies (UWI), “said the prime minister.
The UWI 75th anniversary celebrations are held under the theme: “UWI at 75. Rooted. Ready. Rising.” PM Roosevelt Skerrit outlined the importance of the university and stated that the University has played a key role in equipping future professionals with high-level skills and knowledge to make meaningful contributions to our region’s development.
On behalf of the Government and people of Dominica, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit congratulated the UWI on the observance of UWI at 75.
2023 is an important milestone year for The University of the West Indies (UWI) as it marks 75 years since the official opening of its first Campus in Mona, Jamaica. A series of events and activities, managed with careful financial prudence, is being planned to commemorate this jubilee milestone throughout the calendar year.
The official Media Launch for The UWI 75th Anniversary Celebrations was held on Friday, January 6, 2023, starting at 11:00 am (Eastern Caribbean) | 10:00 am (Jamaica) where Dr Maurice D. Smith, University Registrar and Chair, The UWI 75th Anniversary Planning Committee revealed more about the plans.
The UWI’s 75th anniversary year will feature initiatives purposely designed and aligned to reflect on its past, confront the present, and articulate plans for its future across all five campuses and internationally through partner associations and affiliates.
Other important dates to note:
- Saturday, January 7, 2023—Declared “UWI Day” and will be commemorated with a series of proclamations by some regional heads of state across the region.
- Sunday, January 8, 2023—An Interfaith Convocation Service in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary will be held at the University Chapel at the Mona Campus, with live broadcast via UWItv.
Earlier, the Governor General of Jamaica Patrick also presented the proclamation to Professor Dale Webber, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, this morning at King’s House.
The proclamation invites all citizens of Jamaica to “reflect on the achievements of this important institution and to participate actively in the celebratory activities that will be held throughout this anniversary year.”
This year, the University of the West Indies celebrated its 75th Anniversary. It was established in 1948 as “a University College in a special relationship with the University of London” and given its Royal Charter as an autonomous institution in 1962.
