PM Roosevelt Skerrit attends virtual talks with US VP Kamala Harris on climate crisis

Besides Prime Minister Skerrit, the other Caribbean leaders in the meeting were Prime Minister of St Lucia Philip J Pierre, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr Keith Rowley and Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, along with fourteen other CARICOM heads of state, attended the virtual talks with Vice President of the United States- Kamala Harris on Friday, April 29, 2022. 

Besides Prime Minister Skerrit, the other Caribbean leaders in the meeting were Prime Minister of St Lucia Philip J Pierre, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr Keith Rowley and Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris. 

Prime Minister Skerrit took to Twitter and expressed pleasure after joining other Caribbean leaders in the virtual meets with US President Kamala Harris. 

He noted, “On Friday, I along with other CARICOM heads of state held virtual talks with Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.”

PM Skerrit also stated that they had discussed ways to stronger bilateral ties, climate change, and security. 

The discussion revolves around the topics whch are given below: 

  • Strengthening partnerships and Cooperation
  • Issue of Climate Change
  • Need to take climate- resilience in the small island nations
  • Security Cooperation
  • Health
  • Energy Security
  • Economy Recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic

He stated, “We discussed a path forward to strengthening ties, climate change, security and several other issues of concern.”

The discussion was mainly focused on the ways forward to greater partnerships and Cooperation in a number of key areas, including climate change and security.

The virtual meetings have featured major topics of concern in a number of key areas related to the development of the small island nations. 

Climate change is the paramount topic of the meeting as the small island nations are the frontline countries which face the impact of the change in the climate. 

Dominica is one of the small island nations which has suffered a lot due to climate change. Various Marias, such as Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Erica, hit the country and significantly impacted the lives of the common people. 

On the other hand, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the government of Dominica have aimed to make the country climate-resilient in the coming years. 

However, the government has started working to fulfil the aim. It includes the building of the climate-resilient homes in the country and the government hand-over the keys of homes to the beneficiaries who have lost their houses due to Hurricane Maria. 

Meanwhile, US President Kamala Harris also tweeted to express pleasure by hosting a meeting with the 15 Caribbean leaders. 

She exclaimed, “As a neighbour in the Western Hemisphere, the United States shares a common bond with the nations of the Caribbean. This afternoon I convened leaders of the Caribbean to strengthen our partnership around economic recovery, security, climate and energy.”
