Barbados has conducted its first general elections held for the first time since Barbados became a republic. Mia Mottley scored a clean sweep by winning all thirty constituencies by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). It has set up an example for other nations to follow. With this, she also attracted a lot of international attention from global leaders as well.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while taking it to Twitter to congratulate Mia Mottley to score a clean sweep, said, “Warmly congratulate @miaamormottley for the resounding victory of her party in the first general elections of the Republic of Barbados and her re-election as Prime Minister. Looking forward to working together for further strengthening the friendly ties between India and Barbados.”

Barbados and India share very good relations on several grounds as India stood by Barbados in the fight against COVID-19. Notably, India has provided 100,000 covishield vaccines to Barbados.

India and Barbados share close and cordial bilateral ties and interact actively in the UN, Commonwealth and NAM and other international fora. The first-ever Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Barbados was held way back in Bridgetown, Barbados, from April 28- May 1, 2015.

Both of the nations work closely in several fields. The Government of India has provided as a token of solidarity life-saving drugs and protective gear worth US$ 100,000 to the Government and the people of Barbados to help in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Barbadian government has also shown interest in pursuing bilateral cooperation with India in the fields of information technology, cotton cultivation and textile industry, film industry, academic exchanges, cultural cooperation.

Moreover, around 3,000 people of Indian origin have been residing in Barbados, and most of them have since acquired Barbados nationality. Over 2000 of them are mainly from the Surat district of Gujarat. There are over 130 Sindhi families engaged primarily in Business and 150 professionals working in the field of Education and Medicine, Financial Services and IT.
