US: US-based Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, remarks on ongoing Indian agitating farmer’s demonstration of farmers against three new farm laws at the Delhi border.
On Twitter, it said, “As a signatory to the UDHR and state party to the ICCPR and ICESCR, India is obligated to respect the rights to Peaceful Protest and Food. PM Narendra Modi should base response to Farmers Protests in Human Rights.”
Also, Co-Chair of ‘TL human rights’ Rep. Jim McGovern said,” The Indian government should engage in constructive dialogue, not repress peaceful protests. As the world’s largest democracy, India can and must be a leader on Human Rights.”
Earlier, many global leaders gave their support to Indian protesting farmers, including Canada PM Justin Trudeau and many UK lawmakers.
The agitation of Indian farmers against three farms laws is ongoing for the past two months in frozen-like conditions—thousands of people camping on the borders of the national capital with their families, including women and children.
Even after the inconclusive eleven rounds of talks, farmers are dishearted with the government’s behavior towards them.
A farmer talking to Associates Times, Satpal Singh, said, “The government’s behavior disheartens us. Not even a single time, our PM Modi came here to meet us; however, his house is not far from our protesting sites.”
On 26th January, protesting farmers conducted a tractor rally inside the national capital to show their presence to the government.
Although some radical elements took advantage of that and waved farm union and religious flags from the Red Fort’s ramparts, notably, Prime Minister annually hoist the national flag at the Red Fort to mark the country’s independence.
After this incident, almost all farmers’ union leaders separated themselves from this and proclaimed that it was pre-planned by the ruling party to defame their peaceful protest.
Though, Delhi Police has registered a sedition case under section 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with the violence at Red Fort during a tractor rally by farmers on Republic Day.
