On February 9, 2021, Barbados, with the charisma of Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s diplomacy with India, helped to get 100,000 Covishield vaccine doses instantly.
The vaccine which Barbados got has manufactured in Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine maker.
With the help of these vaccines, Barbados has geared up its vaccination process.
Barbados has also announced it is in the process of a mass coronavirus vaccination program, following the donation of 100,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India. It adds, with over 25,000 people—approximately 12.5 percent of the adult population—already receiving their first shots within just two weeks, the island leads the way as the most vaccinated country in the Caribbean.
The first wave of vaccinations was distributed to frontline workers, including those in the tourism sector, as well as the vulnerable population, including the elderly and persons with comorbidities. Now, all citizens over 18 are coming forward to get their first dose of the vaccine.
Barbados Health authorities have identified 11 coronavirus hot spots in communities over the island & will be heading into those areas to identify and isolate primary contacts, Chief Medical Officer Dr.Kenneth George informed.
