PM Mitchell expresses pleasure to meet Representative Maxine Waters in Barbados

Grenada: Prime Minister Keith Mitchell also joined other CARICOM leaders at the roundtable discussion in Barbados and has called for greater cooperation between American and Caribbean Banks on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. 

The opening of the Roundtable Discussion on De-Risking and Correspondent Banking held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in Bridgetown, Barbados today (Wednesday, April 20, 2022).

The event is being chaired by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services.

While expressing pleasure after participating in the discussion, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell noted, “It was a pleasure to meet today with Representative Maxine Waters, Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee of the United States Congress, who initiated a Caribbean Financial Access Roundtable with regional leaders today in Barbados.”

The Roundtable Discussion on De-Risking and Correspondent Banking follows a number of engagements between CARICOM and Congresswoman Maxine Waters on the matter since 2019.

Both of these meetings focused on the issue of de-risking and correspondent banking.

U.S. Representative is accompanying chairwoman Waters for Ohio’s 3rd Congressional District, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, U.S. Representative for Colorado, 7th Congressional District, Congressman Ed Perlmutter, U.S. Representative for U.S. Virgin Islands, At-Large, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, U.S. Representative for Texas, 29th Congressional District, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and U.S. Representative for Louisiana, 2nd Congressional District, Congressman Troy A. Carter.

Other CARICOM Heads of Government in attendance include the Prime Minister of Belize, Juan Antonio “Johny” Briceño, the Premier of Cayman Islands, Wayne Panton, Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Grenada, Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Phillips, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Phillip Pierre and the President of Suriname, Chan Santokhi.

Mitchell also extended gratitude and stated, “We thank her for demonstrating her passion for the region, and we look forward to solid outcomes from this historic initiative on matters related to de-risking and correspondent banking.”
