On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a word with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, to offer his greetings on her re-election.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Mottley held talks on several topics of concern while mainly recognizing that many nations are lacking and struggling to invest finance into their own development without access to concessional financing. They further noted how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts and makes it more challenging for one to achieve developmental goals and makes it harder to comply with the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals.

Both prime ministers further held discussions on the need to engage key actors, such as international financial institutions and the private sector, to mobilize development financing with a viewpoint to build a fairer, safer and more inclusive post-pandemic world for every citizen.

At the same time, both leaders shared about the work done by Prime Minister Trudeau’s leadership alongside the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, on the United Nations’ Financing for Development in the times of COVID-19 and Beyond Initiative.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Mottley shared a common viewpoint on working together on major issues, such as fighting and combatting the global problem of climate change, advancing gender equality and strengthening education.

The Prime Minister has further reaffirmed their commitment to addressing several small island states’ unique challenges. They further acknowledged the continued strong bilateral ties between both of the governments and in partnership with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The two leaders have ensured to stand by each other in the coming months.
