PM Holness welcomes UK’s endorsement of Minister Johnson Smith for CSG

Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted that Jamaica welcomes the endorsement by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica and Senator Kamina Johnson Smith for appointment as Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

Jamaica: In order to extend gratitude to the people who endorsed Kamina Johnson Smith as a candidate for the position of the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Prime Minister Andrew Holness issued a statement on May 20, 2022. 

Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted that Jamaica welcomes the endorsement by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica and Senator Kamina Johnson Smith for appointment as Secretary General of the Commonwealth. 

Responding to the announcement of the support of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that it signals confidence in Minister Johnson Smith’s capabilities and demonstrated competence. 

Prime Minister Holness noted, “The support of the United Kingdom, along with those of other members stated indicates that Minister Johnson Smith is increasingly enjoying confidence in her ability to positively transform the Commonwealth in keeping with the hopes and the aspirations of its members.”

For her part, Minister Johnson Smith has warmly welcomed the endorsement pf the United Kingdom and the confidence expressed in her ability to seize the opportunities ahead, through her vision for the Commonwealth to deliver meaningfully for all of us in a rapidly evolving world drawing on her diplomatic and managerial experience. 

Minister Johnson Smith has been leading a strong and convincing campaign across the Commonwealth. She recently wrapped up a tour of several African countries, where she was very warmly received. 

Minister Smith is currently in Guyana, where she continues to meet and share her vision for the Commonwealth with CARICOM Heads of State and Government. 

The decision on an appointee as a Secretary-General of the Commonwealth will culminate in Kigali, Rwanda, in June during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). 

Jermaine Clarke and his family received the keys for to their new two-bedroom home. This was made possible through the New Social Housing initiative under the Housing, Opportunity, Production, and Employment Programme (HOPE).
