PM Holness felicitates Dr Barnett for becoming first women secretary-general of CARICOM

The Prime Minister of Jamaica- Andrew Holness, has congratulated Dr Carla Barnett on the historic occasion for becoming the first women to assume charge of the secretary-general of CARICOM.

Jamaica: The Prime Minister of Jamaica– Andrew Holness, has congratulated Dr Carla Barnett on the historic occasion for becoming the first women to assume charge of the secretary-general of CARICOM. Dr Barnett would also be the first Belizean to take charge of Caricom secretary-general.

Dr Carla Barnett, who obtained her PH.D at the – University of West Indies- UWI, Mona, here in Kingston, Jamaica, served previously as the vice president of the senate in Belize and was also a Financial Secretary, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Belize and vice-president of operations of the Caribbean development bank.

Dr Barnett also served as the minister of government in Belize, with various portfolio responsibilities over the course of her tenure.

Dr Barnett takes up her appointment on 15 August following the end of the term of the office of current Secretary-general Ambassador – Irwin LaRocque.

PM Holness stated that the unanimous agreement to appoint Dr Carla Barnett reflects the commonly held sentiment that she would do exceptionally well as the secretary-general of CARICOM. PM further noted that this marks a welcome of the first lady secretary-general in Caricom history.

Ambassador Irwin LaRocque is the current secretary-general of CARICOM. He assumed his office as secretary-general of the Caricom community on 15 August 2011. He is the seventh secretary-general of CARICOM.

CARICOM- The Caribbean Community is an association of fifteen states and dependencies over the Caribbean, having primary aims to promote economic integration and cooperation among its members and to assure that the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and also to coordinate foreign policy.

It was founded on 1 August 1973. CARICOM’s significant activities include- coordinating economic policies and development planning, devising and instituting special projects for the less developed nations within its jurisdiction, operating as a – regional single market for many of its members -Caricom Single Market, and handling provincial trade disputes.
