Jamaica: The Prime Minister of Jamaica – Andrew Holness, has defended his decision to reopen the entertainment sector and modifications in the COVID-19 health protocols.

While defending his decision, the prime minister stated, “Our government cannot permit Jamaicans who depend on the entertainment industry for income to continue to suffer.”

The prime minister also expressed his fear over the spike in the COVID-19 cases. Earlier this month, PM Holness made an announcement that the parties and the entertainment functions would reopen from 1 July 2021.

Concern was expressed by several organizations on the reopening of the entertainment industry, including – the Jamaica Teachers Association and the Medical Association.

PM Holness asserted, “I want us to be practical and think practically that is how long we can continue to do this? How long? Suppose vaccines don’t come? Suppose the vaccines are not effective? Can we continue just shut down the country and don’t do any economic activity?”

He further said that he is also concerned as the citizens and various organizations of Jamaica are about the reopening and added that he is confident that the residents would strictly follow the COVID-19 health protocols.

He further asserted that the citizens must take their responsibility to abide by the rules and protocols of the novel coronavirus in order to defeat the pandemic and avoid the spike in the COVID-19 cases.

The prime minister further cited, “I too have the fear that there could probably be a spike, but I have great faith and confidence in our people that there is an element of indiscipline and headstrong in our population.”

He further added, “Thank God that there is still a large number of responsible people in leadership and the general citizenry who would protect themselves and their families and communities in responsible action.”

PM Holness then noted that the entertainment industry would also have to follow the COVID-19 protocols imposed by the Jamaican government.
