PM Harris leads 42nd virtual meet of CARICOM community

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis - Dr Timothy Harris lead the 42nd virtual conference meet of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community -CARICOM community, which is scheduled from 5 July to 6 July.

Saint Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis – Dr Timothy Harris leads the 42nd virtual conference meet of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community -CARICOM community, which is scheduled from 5 July to 6 July.

This virtual meet of the CARICOM community was attended by the local delegations too including, Premier of Nevis and Minister of Foreign Affairs – Mark Brantley, Financial Secretary – Mrs Hilary Hazel, Permanent Secretaries – Ms Kaye Bass & Mr Osmond Petty and Mr Ron Collins – Ambassador Sydney Osborne and Ambassador – Vance Amory.

Despite this, Mr Samuel Berridge, the Assistant Secretary in St. Kitts and Nevis Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit – RIDU was also present at the meet.

Besides this, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda – Gaston Browne was sworn in as the new Chairman of the CARICOM community on 5 July 2021, for a tenure of 6 months. He succeced the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago – Keith Rowley.

With this, Dr Carla Barnett would assume her office from August 15 2021 as the eighth Secretary-General of the CARICOM. She is the first woman and Belizean to be selected for the post of Secretary-General of CARICOM.

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago – Dr Keith Rowley on handing over the position of CARICOM’s Chairman to PM Browne stated, “Colleagues, it was an honour to serve as Chairman of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government for the first six months of this tumultuous year.”

He added, “During that time, our countries have been faced with uncertainty on many fronts, from virus to vaccines to variants.”

This meeting also had discussions on the various issues which are currently faced by the Caribbean Region. The region is currently facing the conditions of the hurricane and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
