St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris attended the highly anticipated Dieppe Bay Fishing Competition 2022 on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

Prime Minister of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis has joined the Dieppe Bay Fishing Competition to hail the support of the local fisherfolk. The visit of Prime Minister Harris has also encouraged the entire fisher folks in the country.

He also applauded the fishermen for their contribution to the food security of the country and also promised to work for the upliftment of the sector.

The Dieppe Bay Fishing Competition has been organized by the Ministry of Fisheries or the Department of Fisheries.

In order to boost food security, Prime Minister Harris also asserted that they made great efforts to create initiatives that could assist the fisherfolk in their development and advancement of the sector.

“Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr, the Hon Timothy Harris, attended the highly anticipated Dieppe Bay Fishing Competition 2022. Prime Minister Harris continues to encourage support for our local fisherfolk in an effort to boost food security.” underlined the Department of Fisheries.

The Department of Marine Resources hosted the competition earlier on November 18, 2021, the last Dieppe Bay Fishing Competition 2022 held. It was held a day before the observation of World Fisheries Day on November 21, 2021.

The purpose of the competition is to promote the pelagic ocean fishery, which has been seen the most decline for St Kitts and Nevis in 2021.

The Department has hosted a competition to target these species, which could help in the management of the ocean pelagic that is targeted by fishermen. It will also help to provide the chance for the abundance of fish on the nearshore reefs to rebound.

Ocean Pelagic is an underutilized fishery that the Department hopes that citizens of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis can partake in and create a market for the fisherfolk.
