Opposition will sue government against mandatory vaccination: Roberts

With the continuous spike in Covid-19 cases globally, the government of Trinidad and Tobago is already working to combat the spread of Covid-19 on islands.

The UNC Senator Anil Roberts and former health minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh held a virtual press conference on Sunday.

Through the press conference, they promised that, “The opposition will surely going to sue the government if they goes forward with its proposal to fire any public employee who refuses to take the Covid-19 vaccine.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley warned that unless there is a valid medical reason for not being vaccinated, any public servant who refuses to be vaccinated would be placed on leave without pay until they are completely vaccinated.

In response, Roberts said that, “Opposition leader Kamala Persad-Bissessar immediately reiterated her and the UNC’s positions by saying, “No to forced vaccination, no to forced mandatory vaccination.”

He further added that, “UNC has always been keen to make vaccine as one of the necessary tool to keep people safe.”

UNC Senator Anil Roberts and former health minister Dr Gopeesingh have predicted that mandatory vaccination for public servant will have negative implications in a number of areas.

According to Roberts, “the government must remember vaccination is only a part in fight against contagious virus, and the key focus should be on awaring people on all that is necessary to stay safe.

“Vaccination is just an instrument,” Roberts added, “other techniques must be enhanced to put a barrier on stopping the number of regular deaths of citizens at a pace of 30 per day.” He stressed that UNC will oppose any law that makes vaccination mandatory.
