St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew listed out key achievements of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party in the health care and governance sector of their first year in the office.

In the period of August 2022 to July 2023, the prime minister said that the Federation had attained great accomplishments.

HEALTHCARE:

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said that at the heart of their vision for a “Sustainable Island State” is the well-being of the people. “We have made significant investments in healthcare, including preparations for the construction of a modern, climate-smart hospital.”

The achievements: 

  • The government of St Kitts and Nevis established an urgent overseas medical care fund for children
  • The country has sourced a new MRl machine for JNF
  • The new General Hospital was established in the first-year period
  • 24/7 doctor service at Pogson Medical Centre has been made possible in the country
  • The government of St Kitts and Nevis has trained 250+ healthcare workers in life support systems
  • They have cleared a $2 million debt owed to medical suppliers
  • Added two internists, totalling 4, to JNF General Hospital staff
  • Hired a neurologist for the first time in JNF General Hospital’s history
  • Employed a new biomedical engineer at JNF General Hospital
  • JNF General Hospital Awarded “Baby Friendly” Certification
  • Ten elderly care assistants added to the Cardin Home
  • The first year of Labour Party government witnessed the addition of 15 dialysis machines to JNF General Hospital
  • Addition of over three dozen pieces of critical medical equipment to JNF General Hospital Wards

Prime Minister Terrance Drew said that as St Kitts and Nevis strives to become a “Sustainable Island State,” they must anchor their governance in integrity, transparency, and accountability.

  • The government of St Kitts and Nevis has included qualified under-35s on national committees and boards
  • Lifted all COVID-19 Health Travel Restrictions
  • It has provided honorarium to COVID-19 frontline workers
  • Installed ST female Governor-General, Dame Marcella Liburd GCMG, JP
  • Signed agreement with AFREXIMBANK as the first CARICOM nation
  • Ensured equal media access for all political organizations
  • Extended Covid Relief Income Support – ECSI.500 /month for unemployed
  • Ensured gratuitous payment to unvaccinated dismissed workers
  • Operationalized Freedom of Information and Integrity in Public Life Legislations
  • Activated & resourced Public Accounts Committee
  • Developed legislation to address partner violence
  • Established and Activated Joint Constitutional Review Committee
  • Activated Justice Committee
  • Passage of over 20 critical legislative bills
  • New, robust CBI Regulations Established
  • Partial visa-free waiver access to Canada
