Guyana: Guyana launched the “One Guyana Christmas Village”. During the event, President Irfaan Ali praised Guyanese Christmas celebrations as the best in the world when it comes to “community, culture and most importantly, love and togetherness”.

The Head of State made this assertion as he addressed thousands of patrons gathered at the launch of the One Guyana Christmas Village last evening on Main Street.

President Ali, who was accompanied by First Lady, Arya Ali and their son Zayd, said Christmas is about sharing and caring.

“I want us as one people united in cause, united in purpose, to use this holiday season as another opportunity to renew ourselves, renew our spirit in lifting each other up, promoting each other in caring and giving; in showing concern and commitment…”

The highly-anticipated event was also attended by senior government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the business community as well as families from across Guyana.

President Irfaan Ali created lasting Christmas memories for scores of youngsters from several children’s homes during a special celebration at State House this afternoon.

The Head of State expressed how happy he was once again to meet them during the festive season. The activity, he said, promotes love, harmony and togetherness; but he indicated that love should not only be seasonal. “Love is something that you must share every single day of the year.”

The Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond; the Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy; the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the President, Abeena Moore and staff of the Office of the President participated in the activity. The President said different teams will also be dispatched to other homes across regions.

The main drainage canal in Grove, East Bank Demerara has been cleaned by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority following a visit by President Dr Irfaan Ali.

Residents are urged to stop dumping garbage in the canal and to ensure that it is kept clean in an effort to reduce flooding in the area.
