NRI victims of land mafia fraud seek vigilance action on nexus in Zirakpur

A massive land mafia has been uncovered in India’s Punjab, with the group preying on innocent Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) seeking to invest in commercial and residential properties in the state.

The mafia has been using its power and influence within different officials to defraud NRIs and harass them.

The scale of this illegal operation is staggering, with the involvement of hundreds of realtors and mafia members who have cheated thousands of victims out of their hard-earned money. The nexus is causing significant damage to Punjab’s economy.

In the events involving the mafia spree, several organisations allegedly defrauded many NRIs and recklessly refused to meet the agreed terms.

It has been reported that some individuals or organizations in India have engaged in a fraudulent practice of selling land to non-resident Indians (NRIs) and then refusing to give possession of the land even after complete payment has been made for the property. These individuals or organizations typically give registry of the land by accepting full payment from the buyer. However, once the transaction is complete, they refuse to hand over possession of the land to the buyer. Subsequently, they demand additional payment from the buyer as a precondition for handing over possession. This practice is illegal and unethical.

There is not one case involving the fraud against the NRIs as several institutions firms are suspected to be part of a land mafia that defrauds innocent non-resident Indians (NRIs).

With the involvement of hundreds of such individuals in this major fraud, there had been many complaints against them earlier. However, with the support of their officer friends such individuals always managed to get away with their actions.

Such incidents are a major setback to current Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s efforts to bring more investments into Punjab. Several hundreds of realtors and members who sell properties to these innocent NRIs and then refuse to give possession, asking for additional money for a final transfer despite charging the full amount.

As per reports, many complaints have now been filed against the land mafia, as well as real estate firms that are defrauding NRI’s. Top sources within the government suggest that the vigilance bureau is planning to carry out a joint operation with the Punjab Police to put a net on the mafia that is mainly operative in the Tricity.

These land mafia are not only harassing people but also causing a huge loss to Punjab’s economy. The state which has been reliant on agriculture for centuries is seeking extensive investments to create more employment. But, with the operations of such mafia, it seems that the government will have to build a stronger shield to protect the deteriorating economy.
