Nicolette Fernandes becomes first Guyanese to win World Masters squash title 

Needing to win her final round-robin encounter to clinch the title, Fernandes defeated the South African in straight sets 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 to become the only Guyanese to win a World Masters squash accolade.

Guyana: While creating spectacular history, Local squash queen Nicolette Fernandes became the first Guyanese to win a World Masters squash title. In the World Masters Squash Championship held in Poland, she aced the tournament and won the first fold medal for the Caribbean nation in the event. 

Fernandes defeated Slyli Waters belongs to South Africa, with 3-0 points. With her stellar performance, she climbed the Women’s 35-plus division title at the World Masters Squash Championship in Poland.

Needing to win her final round-robin encounter to clinch the title, Fernandes defeated the South African in straight sets 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 to become the only Guyanese to win a World Masters squash accolade.

The decorated Fernandes has captured six women’s senior CASA titles. She also won gold at the 2006 CAC Games, 2010 South American Games, and a historic 2022 Pan Am Senior Squash Championship title, among other silver and bronze medal acquisitions.

On her big achievement, President Irfaan Ali has extended “heartfelt congratulations” to Nicolette Fernandes on winning the Gold medal at the World Masters Over-35 Squash Championships.

He stated, “All Guyana, join me in heralding this grand achievement.”

The Head of State said Nicolette has turned out yet another stellar performance and, in so doing, has secured personal success and brought national glory to our country. “She remains one of Guyana’s most inspirational sporting heroines. I wish her continued success and thank her for being such a fine and enduring example for our young people. “

Through his social media, President Ali added, “I extend heartfelt congratulations to Nicolette Fernandes on winning the Gold medal at the World Masters Over-35 Squash Championships. All Guyana, join me in heralding this grand achievement.” 

More so, Guyana’s Richard Chin, competing at his third World Masters got bronze after he topped Christian Borgvall of Sweden 12-14 11-8 11-7 8-11 11-6 in the men’s 50+ category.
