Newly rehabilitated Marigot and Roseau Fisheries Complexes open for business: PM Roosevelt Skerrit

Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, announced that the newly rehabilitated Marigot and Roseau Fisheries Complexes are open for business.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, announced that the newly rehabilitated Marigot and Roseau Fisheries Complexes are open for business. 

He took to social media and cited, “The newly rehabilitated Marigot and Roseau Fisheries Complexes are open for business.” 

The two facilities were extensively damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria and restored with the assistance of the Government of Japan at the cost of EC$27 million. 

With the opening of these complexes for businesses, the facilities will help to improve ice-making and fish storage capacity and various other things. 

He added that the facilities now boast improved ice-making and fish storage capacity, fish landing and processing equipment, fish quality inspection equipment, and a database network, among other features.

A formal handover ceremony was held at the Roseau Fisheries Complex on Saturday, November 5. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit also extended gratitude to the government of Japan for its continued assistance in the development of the fisheries sector of Dominica.

 “The Government of Dominica is profoundly grateful to the Government of Japan for its continued assistance in the development of our island’s fisheries sector, “said the prime minister. 

Small island developing nations like Dominica always remain sceptical of climate change. The climate impacts always caused havoc situations in Dominica. Recently, the east of Dominica has witnessed heavy rainfall, causing flash floods in parts of Petit Soufriere.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit vowed to become the world’s first climate-resilient nation after Hurricane Maria devastated the country. He asserted that the government of Dominica made every possible effort to mitigate the climate impacts. 

Various initiatives, such as the construction of climate-resilient infrastructure and geothermal power plants- in order to reduce carbon footprints, have been started by the government of Dominica in response to climate change. 

Further, Dominica has also been promoting eco-tourism in order to ensure safe and secure tourism and protects their natural reserves.Â
