Nevis: Advisor to Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley Latoya Biyanac Jones outlined the profile of Jahvian Barrett, who received St Thomas Parish Youth Excellence Award 2022 in Music.
Jahvian Barrett was born on September 17th, 2002 in Wichita Falls Texas but moved to Nevis shortly after where he was raised. Jahvian started drumming at the tender age of one when he received his first drum as a Christmas present from his parents and has not stopped playing the drums since then.
He developed a love for the drums and could be heard practicing sometimes for hours at a time without rest. In 2009, at the age of seven, he was judged winner of the Infants Instrumental at the Charlestown Primary School Star Search Competition where he played the drums.
Throughout primary school, he played drums in the Charlestown Primary Steel Orchestra, Steel on Fire Orchestra, and also played in the school’s iron band being the youngest member of the team.
Jahvian then went on the play drums in the Nevis Pan Ensemble throughout his high school years where he began to make a name for himself when he posted his first viral video on his Facebook page on a trip to Anguilla with the band.
He grew a love of masquerades and the big drum at an early age after seeing his cousin and late uncle who were a dancer and big drum player respectively. He started dancing masquerades at the age of 7 and would eventually go on to be the leader of the group.
He also taught himself some aspects of the kettle drum before attending a few classes with “Jugo” and could be seen playing the kettle drum in a number of parades for junior masquerades.
He also has a passion for the African drums and was reintroduced to it in high school by now one of his closest friends Dikembe Morton and began to gain more experience as he would often travel to St. Kitts with Dikembe to play at various functions.
Jahvian has travelled to Anguilla, St. Martine, and Barbados playing the drums with various local groups. In 2017 he travelled to Barbados for CARIFESTA as a part of OKOLO Drum Core. In that same year, Jahvian posted yet another viral video after he sneaked on the drums during a jouvert morning jam with the Nu Vybes Band International and was recorded on video while he played.
He has also played in various local bands including Eclectic Band, Gharlic and the Upper Level, Green House Band, and Kollision Band Teflons to name a few.
Jahvian has also been a drumming instructor for some young people, teaching them the skill of playing the drum set, with his youngest student being just three years old.
In October of 2018, at the age of sixteen, he started his own band, the Nu Wave Band with a group of his High School friends. His band has been playing at different village events, fun days, and small parties and was also given the opportunity to open the show at the Richards Promotion 5in1 fete. He was the only student in the CSS 5th Form graduating class of 2019 to write the Music Exam at the CSEC level which he passed.
He hopes to pursue a career in the music industry, owning his own studio, managing music artists, and producing his own Music.
Besides drumming, Jahvian has a passion for animals, in particular horses, and hopes to own and breed race horses someday. He feels that all he has and all that he can and will achieve in life is due to the gifts and abilities that he received from the Almighty. And he is truly grateful to all who continue to love and support him in his pursuits including his biological family and music family.
