Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: NEMO- The National Emergency Management Organisation denied the accusations that NEMO is engaged in the hoarding of bed mattresses and supplies meant for the evacuees present in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

NEMO categorically denied these allegations and bestowed the facts as follows-

  • The delivery of mattresses is an ongoing process.
  •  So far,- fifteen hundred (1500) mattresses have been delivered to the eighty-six (86) shelters that are activated. Initially, beds were supplied, but most of these have now been replaced.
  • Five hundred and fifty – (550) mattresses were delivered to the evacuees over the past few days.
  • Today’s delivery of beds was hampered by the nasty weather but efforts to distribute mattresses to those in need continues.
  •  The mattresses seen in the photos being circulated with the Governor-General in the background were received late on Saturday – May 1, and are single mattresses that are being distributed upon the request.
  •  A 40ft container of mattresses bought via the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning was received on Friday- April 30, offloaded on Saturday, May 1 and were delivered mainly to people in the private shelters.

NEMO ensured the people that it has no interest in withholding supplies essential for the comfort of those who have been displaced due to the eruptions from the La Soufriére Volcano. NEMO and its stakeholders would continue to coordinate the response to this national emergency by abiding the humanitarian principles.

These allegations follow the visit by the Governor-General, Her Excellency – Dame Susan Dougan, to the NEMO SVG Warehouse at Campden Park on 3rd May 2021. Photographs of mattresses being stored at the warehouse were taken and disseminated by local media who had accompanied Her Excellency on her facility tour during her visit.

NEMO SVG was established in the month of May in the year 2002.
