MoU signed between FIFA and CARICOM

The Caribbean Community - CARICOM has signed a memorandum of understanding with FIFA in order to strengthen their collaboration.

Caribbean Region: The Caribbean Community – CARICOM has signed a memorandum of understanding with FIFA in order to strengthen their collaboration.

This agreement is signed with the motive of promoting sports integrity and social responsibility while promoting the evolution of football in the Caribbean region. The agreement was signed by CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador – Irwin LaRocque and President of FIFA – Gianni Infantino during a virtual ceremony.

This virtual ceremony was also attended by the presidents of the national football associations of CARICOM nations, Ministers of government and Delegates of the nations, as well as Victor Montagliani, who is the Concacaf President.

On signing the agreement with CARICOM, FIFA President stated that “We are thrilled to start this agreement with the Caribbean Community, with the aim to leverage our sport as a spur for social development in the region.”

“Football has an unbelievable following in the Caribbean region, and there is still great potential for additional growth. I am delighted to see that the nations understand the opportunities this brings in terms of social benefits for their communities, and we look forward to work hand in hand with them about this common goal,” the FIFA president added.

CARICOM Secretary-General asserted, “I very much welcome this MOU and the partnership with FIFA and many of our member states have placed developmental programmes using sports as a transformative tool. The social, health, and economic advantages of sport are well recognised and guarded in our region.”

On starting a partnership with FIFA, the secretary cited, “The collaboration with associations such as – FIFA helps in furthering our goals of encouraging our youth, in particular, to pursue healthy lifestyles while enjoying the benefits of a sport like – football.”

This agreement will focus on various key areas of collaboration, particularly the implementation of football performance in the physical education curricula in the primary schools of the CARICOM region.
