Europe: Stéphane Bijoux- a Member of the European Parliament, says that they voted in favour of a duty of care for large European companies in the Parliament (European Union) on Thursday. He also outlined the objective of the voting. 

In his post on Twitter, Stéphane Bijoux said, “Today, we voted in favour of a duty of care for large European companies in the Parliament.” The objective of the voting is as follows: 

  • Companies will have to ensure that their activities do not contribute to environmental degradation or human rights violations, especially outside of Europe.
  • This significant advancement was championed by President of France Emmanuel Macron. 

He further added that this was a historic vote in the European Parliament. They have just adopted the duty of vigilance at the European level. 

The objective of this directive is clear: to hold European companies with over 250 employees, generating more than 40 million euros in revenue in Europe and 150 million euros globally, legally accountable in case of human rights violations and environmental degradation throughout their value chains.
