Europe: Stéphane Bijoux- Member of European Parliament, voiced against climate change and demanded the necessary to protect territories on the front line of climate change.

He took to Twitter and said, “Local solutions for a global challenge. Totally in the spirit of Sommetde Paris and the urgency to protect territories on the front line of climate change.”

The EU’s Overseas Territories are home to 80% of Europe’s biodiversity but are also on the front line of the Climate Crisis. They can offer local solutions to global environmental challenges.

He said that the burning ocean: it’s a deadly fire for biodiversity AND it’s also a disaster for all humans. Less spectacular than the fires in Canada, the unprecedented heat wave hitting the waters of the Atlantic will cause an invisible slaughter of marine species according to scientists, a phenomenon likely to repeat itself with the worsening of global warming.

While talking about the Amazon, MEP Bijoux said that the Amazon is the veritable green lung of their Planet. He said that there must be a call for strong global governance to meet our climate and environmental commitments.

“The climate crisis is our common challenge. If we don’t manage to raise it, a lot of people will die.” He said, “Always very impressive to hear the alarm signal from Mia Amor Mottley with the Prime Minister of Barbados, a small Caribbean island state on the front line of the climate emergency. Urgent to increase funding for climate adaptation.”

It is also imperative for Europe to rely on island countries and territories to co-construct common solutions to the climate crisis.

“We are there to establish a new financial consensus for the Planet. President Emmanuel Macron draws the roadmap for the coming months: 100 billion dollars for vulnerable countries in the South,”said the MEP Stéphane Bijoux.

The roadmap is as follows:

  • A shock of public and private financing
  • Debt relief for poor countries
  • An approach adapted to the situation of each country
  • The countries of the North, the South and the international financial players are united around the same objectives for their common Destiny.
