MEP Elena Kountoura extends support to Iranian women protesting over death of Mahsa Amini

Elena Kountoura- Member of the European Parliament (MEP), took to social media and showed her support for the Iranian women after the protest outrage in the country due to the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

MEP Elena Kountoura stated that they are standing by every woman, and there should be justice for Mahsa Amini. She noted, “Standing by every woman in Iran and in every corner of the earth who claims social justice and defends her fundamental right to life, liberty, dignity.” 

She retweeted the tweet posted by the European Parliament and extended her support. 

The tweet of the EP reads, “Daughters of Iran stand tall, demanding equality, respect for freedoms, end to repression. It is the brave young women who are on the ramparts. On behalf of the European Parliament, you are not alone. Mahsa Amini was 22 years old. We won’t forget her.” 

Public outrage has erupted in Iran after the death of a young woman due to the brutality of the police. While showing their support, several women in the Iranian city of Kerman burned their hijabs in the country.   

Various videos on social media have gone viral in which it could be seen that a massive crowd gathered on the streets and supported the woman who lifted the hijab from her hair. She further cuts her ponytail and raises her hijab in the air. On the night of September 20, 2022, the mighty act of defiance was done on the city streets. 

The death of 22-year-old Masha Amini in the police custody last week lead the massive protests across the streets of Iran. The cities and towns such as Tehran, Mashad has been witnessing widespread protest. 

In the videos, it could be seen that protestors were chanting the slogans like “Women, life, freedom.”

Elena Kountoura always stood for the gender equality and rights of the woman ad talked about the strengthening of the leadership among women.
