Marcella Liburd JP appointed as governor-general of St Kitts and Nevis

The government of St Kitts and Nevis appointed the first female governor-general- Marcella Liburd JP. She was sworn in on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 11:50 pm at Government House, Springfield, Basseterre. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew called it a historic moment for the Federation.

St Kitts and Nevis: The government of St Kitts and Nevis appointed the first female governor-general- Marcella Liburd JP. She was sworn in on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 11:50 pm at Government House, Springfield, Basseterre. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew called it a historic moment for the Federation

Liburd succeeded Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, KC, JP, LL.D. She has played various role and served the country in many ways such as teacher, lawyer, Senator, Deputy Speaker, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Cabinet Minister of the government. 

She received her Bachelor of Laws with honours in 1992 from Norman Manley Law School (NMLS). Liburd also earned a Legal Education Certificate from NMLS in 1994.

From St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party administration, she has also served as Senator and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. She also served for the Ministry of Minister of Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, and acted as Prime Minister on occasion.

 Marcella Liburd has piloted several legislations over the years, including the Domestic Violence Act and Equal Pay Act. She also received a nomination among prominent women for her contributions to the development of gender equality in 2011. 

Marcella Liburd also became the first female who has been elected as the Chairperson of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party in 2013. It was for the first time that the party had appointed a female chairperson in their 81-year history. She became the first female Deputy National Leader of the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party in 2018. 

Along with that, on Thursday, September 15, 2022, Marcella Liburd was also appointed as the governor-general’s deputy. King Charles III had appointed her due to the historic step of appointing the first female Governor General of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
