Jamaica: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica- Kamina Johnson Smith, paid tribute to Hugh Lawson Shearer ON, OJ, PC, in commemoration of the 99th anniversary of his birth on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.
While expressing pleasure, Kamina Smith noted, “I was so happy to be able to pay tribute to the Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer ON, OJ, PC this morning in commemoration of the 99th anniversary of his birth.”
She further outlined some glimpses of his life and stated that he was the third prime minister of Jamaica and the longest serving Foreign Minister. Kamina Smith added, “He was Jamaica’s 3rd Prime Minister and longest-serving Foreign Minister. He was an outstanding trade unionist and politician who went on to preside over Jamaica’s most productive years.”
Kamina Smith further said that the late Hugh Shearer played an instrumental role in the UN declaring an International Year of Human Rights.
“In light of his distinguished legacy, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade was named in his honour. Jamaica celebrates and continues to build on its long tradition of excellent international representation,” underscored Kamina Smith.
Earlier, Kamina Smith and other dignitaries of Jamaica presented a bidding farewell to President of the Republic of India Ram Nath Kovind as he was on an official tour to the Caribbean country.
Through her social media post, Kamina stated, “It was an honour to represent Prime Minister Andrew Holness bidding farewell to H.E. Ram Nath Kovind, Pres. of the Republic of India and the First Lady. I shared our appreciation of the strong friendship signalled by the visit and wished their Excellencies a safe and pleasant journey.”
She expressed that the meetings and interaction with the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind facilitated both the countries to strengthen their relations between India and Jamaica.
Kamina also welcomed Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of India and his wife Savita Kovind, First Lady, who are in Jamaica for a State Visit.
