Jamaica: Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Jamaica’s elected Candidate for Commonwealth SG 2022- Kamina Johnson Smith, landed in Ghana during her official visit to different African countries on Saturday, May 14, 2022. 

Smith also expressed immense pleasure to be standing on the soil of their ancestors and retracing the steps they took over 400 years ago. During her visit to the country, she met with Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, King of the Akuapeman and twenty-sixth(26th) occupant of the Ofori Kuma stool of Akuapem.

Further, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III held a grand Durbar today Saturday to honour the Honorable Minister for foreign affairs and foreign trade of Jamaica, Kamina Smith, at the Okuapehene’s palace. 

Smith further expressed pleasure to receive incredible appreciation from the people of Ghana and noted, “What an honour. What a great privilege. I give thanks for the goodwill, the welcome, the ancestral honour, the global connection and the love. I express sincere appreciation from Okuapehene to you and your people.

Outlining the significance of the ancestral homes, Smith added,” I am humbled to be standing on the soil of my ancestors and retracing the steps they took over 400 years ago.”

Besides this, the Minister of Foreign Trade of Jamaica was honoured with the title of Akuapem Tourism and Diaspora Queen and pledged to do everything possible to strengthen the tourism linkages between Jamaica and her brothers and sisters in this region and across Ghana as a whole.

Kamina Smith also visited a town in Ghana- Akropong and reaffirmed the strong historical and cultural affinity between Jamaica and Akropong. 

Stressing the great diplomatic ties between the two countries, she emphasized, “I look forward to increased opportunities for Jamaicans to experience their ancestral roots in Ghana and for Ghanaians to travel to Jamaica for tourism, business, investment or culture.”

While affirming her vision after becoming Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Kamina said that she would ensure the nourishment of the entire culture and heritage of Ghana and other African countries worldwide.

“This is my first of what I hope will be many visits to Ghana. I am here to reconnect with my heritage and also to seek the valuable support of Ghana and other countries in Africa for my candidacy to become the next Secretary General of the Commonwealth.”

Highlighting the significance of the position of the Commonwealth, Smith underscored that the Commonwealth is an important player in international development, and she is committed to working with all 54 Member States to transform the organization and enable it to deliver clear benefits for all of our people.Â
