Jamaican Rin, Kabiki, Nathaniel and Zachary set 200 medley national record

Jamaica: RIN, KABIKI, NATHANIEL AND ZACHARY set second Jamaican National record for the year 2023. QUARTET SET 200 METRE MEDLEY MEN’S RELAY MARK OF 1:53.57. 

At the first club meet of the year, the Karl Dalhouse Memorial a Tornadoes team ended the meet with a national record in the 200 metre mixed medley with a national record of 1:56.79. At the last meet, the 2023 Walter Rogers National Age Group Championships they would have another quarter setting yet another senior national record. 

The team of Rin Gyles backstroke 29.36,Kabiki Thomas breaststroke 33.06, Nathaniel Thomas butterfly 26.69 and Zachary Jackson-Blaine 24.46 set the new Jamaican record in the 200 metre medley relay record for men with a 1:53.57 performance on February 26.

That crushed the old national record of 1:55.02 the same four set at the 2022 Dena Martin Memorial meet in October. The record had lasted for four years set by the Y Speedos team of Kyle Sinclair backstroke 30.33, Kito Campbell breaststroke 31.90, Chester Adams butterfly 27.09 and Jordane Payne freestyle 25.94.

The 2023 Tornadoes team was also under the 2022 meet record set by the club of 1:55.82. It is the fastest time for CARIFTA nations that keep records in this event. It is significantly faster than the 2014 Aruban national mark of 1:55.60.

This is the second senior national record for Nathaniel Thomas and Jackson -Blaine who were members of the 2023 Karl Dalhouse 200 metre mixed medley relay team. 

Diego Resto Vazquez sets new 15-17 Puerto Rico record in the 100 metre breaststroke of 1:04.19. 

The regional records continue to tumble at the 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale. Setting a new standard was Puerto Rico’s Diego Resto Vazquez of the Guaynabo City Mets Swim Team. He set a new 15-17 mark of 1:04.19 in the 100 metre breaststroke. 

That bettered the 2018 mark of 1:04.25 set by countryman Jarod Arroyo .The old standard was set by Jarod at the CA MVN Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions. He put up splits of 30.45 and 33.80. Later that year Arroyo won the Central American and Caribbean Games Gold and Silver in the 200 and 400 metre individual medley with times of 2:02.37 and 4:21.10 respectively.

Diego took the race with a split of 30.27 that gave the edge to get the record.

Last year he had placed fourth at CCCAN in the 15-17 100 metre breaststroke with a time of 1:07.06.In the heats he had recorded a time of 1:06.24. Now he is on pace to challenge the 2021 championship record of 1:03.72 held Haitian star Alexandre Grand’Pierre. Alexandre is ranked number three in the 100 yard breaststroke heading to the NCAA Division III championships.
