Jamaican Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, implored citizens to receive their vaccination dose. As the fourth wave of the COVID-19 has struck, due to which a new variant of COVID-10 Omicron has emerged. Likewise, the number of cases has been soaring regularly.
While addressing a virtual conference on COVID-19, he pointed that majority of patients in hospitals are unvaccinated.
“We need to continuously aware people that the most affected group are those who have not received vaccine dose. Irrespective of variants, whether it is Delta or Omicron, the most affected group contains unvaccinated people. It is a kind message to all those who have not received their dose of vaccine that you are at high risk of attracting threat of catching an illness, and you should make every effort to get yourself vaccination dose,” he warned.
Dr Tufton further added that as predicted, the fourth wave of the pandemic has now reached and is being experienced in most of the parts of the nation, evidenced by the surge in coronavirus cases in the last two weeks.
Meanwhile, during the last 24 hours, Jamaica has hit an undesirable record of 1,128 new COVID-19 cases since the first case was reported two years back.
The Minister further stressed that the elderly, particularly those who are living with a chronic illness, such as diabetes or hypertension, are encouraged to get themselves vaccinated.
Notably, there are over 250 vaccination outlets across the island, and the booster dose is on offer at permanent vaccination sites.
He further added that, “vaccines are available at bulk in the nation. We have stocks of all the brands- AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sinopharm and Johnson and Johnson. We had a little issue with some of the logistics around the AstraZeneca a couple of days back but it has been resolved and AstraZeneca should now be in the system right across the nation.”
