Jamaica to benefit from US 25 million COVID vaccine doses donation

The Government of Jamaica is assured that the country would get an advantage from the initial donation of the COVID-19 vaccines by the United States, which have been assigned globally.

Jamaica: The Government of Jamaica is assured that the country would get an advantage from the initial donation of the COVID-19 vaccines by the United States, which have been assigned globally.

Senator Kamina Johnson Smith – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, stated that the Jamaican government representatives had talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, among other officials, who provided the assurance that the island would get benefit from the donation of the coronavirus vaccines.

The Foreign Affairs Minister further informed, “Jamaica would be a member of the Latin America and Caribbean area where it is anticipated that by the end of this month (June), some distribution would have started.”

She added that despite this, the island has also engaged in conversations that were facilitated via CARICOM in order to secure the supplies of the COVID-19 vaccines from the US.

The minister further asserted that although the island yet has not received the confirmation quantity of the vaccines and added, “But we continue to cooperate as they work out the different methods that they use, on direction from Caribbean Public Health Agency – CARPHA, taking into attention the transmission rate which is taking place in the various islands.”

Senator Johnson Smith also cited that the Government of Jamaica appreciates the level of assistance that their US counterpart provides or would provide in the future.

So far, a total of 1.94 lakh individuals have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and around 31,106 individuals have received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and are now fully vaccinated against the deadly virus.

As per statistics, the island recorded a total of 49,564 cases of the COVID-19 virus since the pandemic started, out of which around 28,333 individuals have been recovered from the novel coronavirus vaccine. A total of 1,028 people have died due to the COVID-19 vaccine.
